Old Silkstone Brass Band
Old Silkstone Brass Band

Beresfords Solicitors are the proud sponsors of Old Silkstone Band, who were formed in 1861.

In recent years, new life has been breathed into the Band due to the efforts of Ian Askey, Mick Fieldsend, Stuart O’Connor and other like minded individuals. Lottery funding has been gained to ensure a good instrument base with older instruments being used to form what is now a strong “ B “ Band under the baton of Wayne Bostwick (a player in the senior band).

Norman Law has been Musical Director since 2000 and success has followed in contests such as Pontins, Northern Open, Tameside, North West High Peak, and Yorkshire Area. The Band gained promotion to the 1st Section from January 2004 and have recently bettered that by gaining promotion to the Championship, the highest level in the Brass Band world.

The Band works hard for the Silkstone community and is always an integral part of any village event. It has been an ambassador for Silkstone and Barnsley, representing both abroad on several occasions.

The sponsorship deal is aimed at community projects utilising the Band and Beresfords' expertise. The link between the Band and Beresfords comes through the mining community that both organisations have been associated with for many years. It is hoped that the partnership can flourish resulting in more community projects such as brass masterclasses in schools around Yorkshire.

Beresfords are delighted to be associated with the Band and wish all the members every success in the future.

For information on the Band’s busy concert schedule, CDs or to engage the Band, please contact Ian Askey on 01226 370888.
